A Secret Play Date.

Every Tuesday.

As part of my plan to bring more making into my life and business, as well as more connection to the physical world, I'm spending an hour a week in a Secret Play Date.

A date with play.

You can, too, right here.

Here's how to do it:

Pick a project or a piece of a project.

Maybe it's something that's stalled. Maybe it's something that's been just a gleam in your eye until now.

Take one hour out of your Tuesday to work on it, but not in the traditional way.

We're going to mess around with tactile materials to shift ourselves and our projects. With no special supplies, just whatever's at hand.

If you have art or craft supplies, that's great. But you could also use highlighters, dry-erase markers, wite-out, aluminum foil, food coloring, ketchup ... you see where I'm going with this.

Remember when you were a kid?

It didn't really matter whether you had this or that toy because you used whatever was at hand.

Like that.

Why?

Because I know that switching gears from writing or crunching numbers or formatting a web page can help energize you, help spark new ideas or solutions.

Secret Play Date is a space you can just drop into for an hour, open all day Tuesday.

Part co-working space, part art studio, part secret hide-out.

You can make a Post-It mosaic.

You can make washes of color that describe how you feel about that business plan.

Work on your marketing plan. Your sales copy. Your next event. Your talk.

Why is it secret?

Well, you might work in an office. An office or studio where they would not quite get this. So maybe you sneak off for an hour to a coffee shop with a fistful of colored Sharpies and a glue stick.

At the same time, you're part of a secret society of people who like to inject a little fun into serious business, who like to do a little something with their hands besides tap a keyboard, and who like trying new things to get their creative juices flowing.

We're all doing it on the same day. We're all rooting for each other.

Then what?

In the comments, you can check in to let us know how you're doing, and give a yay for the people who are joining in. You can use this as a format if you like, but you don't have to.

Example:

What I'm working on:

My calendar for next year.

How I'm going to work on it today:

Use some big newsprint paper to make some very sketchy calendar pages. Make symbols on Post-its with marker and glitter glue to represent projects. Cover the draft calendar with them. Take some pics (in case the calendar falls apart).

How it's going:

Great, but running out of glitter glue!

(Your Thing can be much loopier than a calendar, of course.)

On Facebook, you can post to the smArts & Culture wall.

You don't have to share, though.

You could note it in your journal, or whisper it to the cat, and still feel the glow of being part of a group that does things a little differently for an hour every Tuesday.

Since I'm scheduling this post ahead of time, look for my check-in in the comments.

What will you Play-Date today?

P.S. You can take a look at the comments from last week's Play Date, too, for inspiration.

Secret Play Date, yo!

What I'm working on:

Finding a name for a free thing I want to tell you about. But it has no name thus far. So I can't tell you.

How I'm going to work on it today:

First, I'm going to give it the Dance of Shiva treatment. Then, I'm going to alternate - 10 minutes brainstorming names, 10 minutes drawing patterns in my notebook, probably just in pen, but I may embellish with marker or some other kind of color. 10 minute/10 minutes til an hour is up.

How it's going:

Just about to do Shiva Nata.

Done!

Just as I wanted to, I alternated 10 minutes of brainstorming with 10 minutes of drawing and I not only came up with the name of the thing, but I wrote the description for the page! Yes!

I thought I'd switch up and do a different doodle each time my drawing minutes came up, but I ended up working on just one. You can find it here.

How's your Secret Play Date going?

Yay for the naming & doodling! Can't wait to hear more about it.

I was thinking I would play date this afternoon, and then I realized I have exactly an hour before a call, which seems just perfect. (I love the limited container to this!)

What I'm working on:
Very vague moodling about some possible next incarnations of my Thing.

How I'm working on it today:
I'm also trying to sew this silly little kimono for a baby girl about to make her world debut any day.

So I want to ask myself a question about the moodling, then forget the question and sew for 10 minutes, and then brainstorm and jot down notes about the question for 10 minutes.

And repeat until it's time for my call.

How it's going:
Time to get out my sewing machine and fabric! Oh, and figure out my first question...

Thank you for introducing the word 'moodling' to my vocabulary! And a tiny kimono - sounds like a perfect play date!

Whee! I'd describe that sewing + moodling triple decker sandwich using one of my very favorites words... fruitful! Thank you for this. Play date, FTW!

mmm, like a club sandwich of goodness! I'm so glad it worked out for you!

Play date!

What I'm working on today.
Finalizing my 2011 schedule and getting it up online

How I'm going to play
I really like the alternating ten minutes idea.

So. I'm going to spread out colored notecards and put one thing on each card. Ten minutes of interacting with a card, ten minutes of using the living room as a jungle gym.

Yay secret play date!

I'm curious to see how the 10 minutes/10 minutes worked out for you - I really liked working that way.

I'm excited for my first Secret Play Date! :)

What I'm Working on: Planning the modules for the program I'm launching in January.

How I'm Going to Work on it Today: I think I have some wax crayons in my craft box... I'm going to pull those out and use them to create giant outlines on pieces of paper for my modules... Or something like that - who knows what it will evolve into! ;)

How It's Going: Yep, found the crayons - and some markers - and dinosaur stencils!!! ;) I'm going to have fun with this.... I'll check back in after the date with a follow up! :)

Well, I didn't quite make it the full hour - I started to get restless, and rather than pushing through when I didn't want to do it anymore, I stopped. ;) I have three sheets of colorful ideas for three modules up on my wall! :D And it certainly gave me a bit of a different perspective on the content I was focused on... :)

I'll definitely be back for Secret Play Date next week!

That's so great, Jess! I think you're absolutely right to stop when it starts getting forced. Hope to see you next Tuesday!

For the life of me, I cannot think of what to work on! I feel as if this is interesting and deserves some thought.

But for now, I think I will work on a project that is a year or so down the road by finding words and making word tickets that remind me of the project. Plus, I can use the word tickets to play later. (And, I have exactly an hour.)

Yay!

That was fabulous! I did not exactly choose words that reminded me of the project, but I need to play with words more in anticipation of the project so now I have a gigantic colorful pile of words to play with. Hurrah!

Hurrah for giant colorful piles of words! I'm glad it worked out.

My partner and I are going to work on our play project: publishing her learning-the-letters songs. She has the light table to redraw letter pictures, I will be typing up lyrics as she sings them to me (they're all in her head) and figuring out chords on the guitar. And we're in front of the fire.

That sounds like an amazing amount of cozy fun, Do Mi!

Success! All lyrics are typed in, and Trisha can't stop redesigning pictures. We've moved ourselves along on this project very nicely. I'll definitely be back next Tuesday!

Excellent! I will see you next week!
