After asking 'what am I all wrong about?' I was inspired by Steven Pressfield's new book, Do the Work, to ask 'What's missing?'
(The Kindle edition of Do the Work is free, by the way, and a very short, worthwhile read.)
Steven asks 'what's missing?' after the shitty first draft is done.
Beyond the draft of your thing, I think it's a useful question to ask, in general.
What is missing from my day?
Suddenly, I'm missing being outdoors.
I usually have to drag myself outside, even in lovely weather.
I want to be outdoors right now. I actually want to feel the cool, spring air.
But I also know my best, most energetic work happens in the morning.
So I need to open a window. I need to take breaks by walking around the block. I need to be sure I get in an evening walk.
What else is missing from my day?
I just have to keep reminding myself. Envisioning my day the night before would help.
What is missing from my Shiva Nata practice?
At the moment, it needs to loosen up.
Rallying could help.
What's missing from my journaling?
More ... reflection?
I used to note all the time -- what's good and what's not so good about X; what did I get right and what would I do differently.
What else? Wishes.
Looking to others for inspiration rather than comparison.
Asking my business, what's missing?
Or, what am I missing?
Business: Your chance.
B: You have the chance to change everything?
me: Everything as in ... ?
B: The world.
me: ??? You mean I'm not thinking big enough? Because 'changing the world' is totally not something I would say.
B: Yup. Not thinking big.
me: But ... it's not like I'm downsizing big ideas. Sometimes I do think I'm not big enough to do a particular project, but I work with that thought.
B: You need to think, each time you have an idea, how could this be bigger?
me: So, for the Society of the Secret Play Date,* I should think, how could this be bigger?
I feel like I'm already doing that!
For instance, I want X. I want Y. I want temporary tattoos for the Society!
B: Secret Play Date is a foundation of your business. Why not expand your thinking beyond X and Y?
me: I'm missing ... live events?
Like, not just live, real-time calls with the Play Daters, but live, in-person events?
I don't think I have enough people yet who would fly in just to do a live Play Date with me.
But, hmmm. What if I piggy-backed it onto something that my people are already likely to do?
Like, if my people usually go to SXSW, I could set up a get-together there, on the periphery.
Business to me: What else is missing?
me: Dance of Shiva is missing.
It's such an integral practice for me, but I don't incorporate it into anything I teach. Hmm.
Do you want to ask, what's missing?
